Overview
Corticotropin, or ACTH(1-39), is the intact 39-mer melanocortin generated when the anterior pituitary proteolytically processes proopiomelanocortin (POMC). Acting as the terminal signal of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the peptide engages melanocortin receptor 2 (MC2-R) on adrenocortical cells, where it triggers glucocorticoid biosynthesis and the downstream release of cortisol. This full endogenous form is the benchmark against which truncated adrenal-stimulating fragments are compared in receptor-pharmacology work.
