Overview
As the principal regulator of erythropoiesis, Erythropoietin (EPO, or Epoetin) signals through the homodimeric EPO receptor on erythroid progenitors to drive red-cell production. It is a 165-amino-acid glycoprotein hormone made natively by renal interstitial cells and produced for therapy as a recombinant glycoprotein biologic (Epogen, Procrit, Eprex, NeoRecormon, and numerous biosimilars), with approvals for chemotherapy-associated anemia, anemia of chronic kidney disease, and further indications worldwide. Both its prescription status and its role in athletic-doping enforcement make it one of the most tightly controlled biologicals in cross-border trade.
